Alice Lloyd Eagles drop contest at West Virginia Tech University

Beckley, WV:  On Saturday, February 9th, the Alice Lloyd Eagles journeyed to the Mountaineer state to face a tough West Virginia Tech Golden Bear squad in River States Conferences play. The contest was tight for the first thirteen minutes before the hosts used a massive run to gain separation and take the convincing 92-61 win.

In the opening stanza, the Eagles got out to a great start. Four different players scored as they raced out to a 10-2 lead at the 16:10 mark. They would maintain that cushion until Tech guard Braden Chapman swished a trifecta with 11:27 showing. This put the Bears on top for the first time, 17-15.

The two squads traded buckets before senior guard Jared Strickland canned an 18-foot jump shot at 7:13. This placed the Pippa Passes posse back in the lead at 23-22. Little did anyone realize the pendulum was getting ready to swing in the hosts favor in a major way.

From that juncture, WVT would drill four long bombs and close the half on a massive 21-4 blitz. The Mountaineer club would take a 43-27 cushion into intermission.

In the second stanza, the Pippa Passes posse would see any hopes of a comeback quicky vanish as Tech opened by pounding the ball inside for points in the paint. This would give them a sizable lead. Despite Eagles freshman guard Daniel Carmical heating up in the final twenty minutes, his crew would get no closer than 17 points the remainder of the way.

Alice Lloyd (11-13; 3-11 RSC), would place just two players in double figures. They were led on the day by Carmical, who drained five trifectas for 15 points. Strickland finished right behind, as he chipped in with 14. Freshman guard Landon Napier contributed 8 points and 4 rebounds.

In addition, senior forward Ben Soumahoro and sophomore guard Koji Anderson each had 3 assists while junior forward Devaunte Robinson led the club with 5 caroms. Freshman center Micah Wills joined Anderson with 2 steals apiece.

The Pippa Passes club shot 34.4% (21-61) from the field, and 35.5% (11-31) from beyond the arc. They were also 72.7% (8-11) from the charity stripe. They snared 29 rebounds, handed off 12 assists, stole 8 balls, and blocked 1 shot.

WVU (16-6; 9-4 RSC) was led by Chapman with 23 points. His squad shot a blistering 57.6% (34-59) from the field, and 43.2% (16-37) from beyond the arc. They finished at 57.1% (8-14) from the free throw line. In addition, they added 42 rebounds, handed off 30 big assists and stole 5 balls.

The Eagles will return home on February 13th for a matchup against the Rio Grande Red Storm. Tipoff is set for 7:30 pm.
