Alice Lloyd Soccer Falls in Defensive Battle at Johnson University, 1-0

Knoxville, TN: On October 26th, the Alice Lloyd Eagles soccer team journeyed to the Volunteer state to face the home-standing Johnson University Royals. In a tough defensive matchup, the hosts prevailed after 90 minutes, 1-0.

The Eagles were ready from the start and demonstrated tough defense. Eagle goalie Joseph Westphal was especially solid as he stopped several shots on-net. However, the Royals were equally stingy with their defense. The squads would enter the locker room for intermission locked in a 0-0 duel.

The second half started the same way, as neither club would yield a goal. Westphal was definitely sharp as he continued his excellent play. However, things would finally change for the worse in the 71st minute.

With ALC handed a pair of yellow cards in a short time period, JU saw Matheus Chamusca use that to his advantage and finally break through the ice with a goal (1-0). From there, Westphal stopped all other shots, but on this day, the Eagles were unable to produce a game-tying kick. Unfortunately, the final horn sounded with the same score glaring on the board.

On the day, the big difference was shots. The Royals (2-12-2) had 36, compared to the Eagles 9. They also maintained a decisive 16-1 advantage in corner kicks.

Westphal was impressive in the hard-luck defeat, as he stopped 18 JU attempts and allowed just 1 score Unfortunately, Alice Lloyd only was able to muster 4 shots-on-goal for the entire contest. This proved crucial towards the final outcome.

In addition, ALC also had 3 yellow cards, while the home club played penalty-free ball. Both squads committed 10 fouls

The Eagles (3-9-2) return to action on Monday, October 30th, when they close out the regular season at Ohio Christian University. The opening kick is scheduled for 3:30pm.
