Lady Eagles Falter Late at Midway University
Midway, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles held a five-point lead with under three minutes remaining, only to watch the highly regarded Midway University Lady Eagles close with a 10-2 burst to pull off the comeback win, 65-62. The matchup took place Saturday in central Kentucky.
In the opening period, both squads had trouble finding the bucket. However, ALC freshman guard Shelby Stewart scored 5 points, and ALC would lead 13-12 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the squads changed hoops as the lead went back-and forth. Eventually, the hosts would manage to score four points in the last .25, and lead 27-25 at intermission.
In the third period, Stewart and senior guard Hannah Kashwould combine for 12 points for the Caney Creek club, as both teams heated up. Once again, the hosts would sink a late bucket, and lead 49-47 heading into the last quarter.
In the final stanza, the Lady Eagles would battle hard to regain the lead. They would manage to pull ahead 60-55 lead at 2:55 following a tip-in from junior forward Madison Thompson. Unfortunately, Midway would drain a big trifecta to jump-start a comeback.
MU would eventually knot the score at 60-60 with 1:40 left. The hosts would then sink six free throws to close out the game and take the win.
For Alice Lloyd (14-6; 7-5 RSC), Kash led the way with 17 points and 7 assists. She added 8 rebounds and 3 steals. Stewartdrained three bombs and added 11 points. Moore came up with 10 points and 7 rebounds while Thompson chipped in with 7 points, 9 rebounds, and 3 blocks.
The Eagles shot 36.4% (20-55) from the field and 31.3% (5-16) from long range. They connected on 81% (17-21) from the foul line, and added 40 rebounds, 11 assists, 6 steals, and 3 blocks
Midway (15-7; 10-2 RSC) was paced by Dezeree White with 22points. Her squad finished shooting 29.8% (17-57) from the field and 25% (4-16) from deep. They won the game from the foul line, connecting on 75% (27-36). They also added 39rebounds, 13 assists, and 13 steals.
The Lady Eagles return to action next week in a conference road trip to Pittsburg (PA) for two contests. On Thursday, February 2nd, they will face the Carlow Celtics at 5:30pm. They then face the Point Park Pioneers on Saturday February 4th, at 1:00pm.
