ALC Lady Eagles take down Welch College, 80-66
Pippa Passes, KY: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles basketball team returned home on Saturday, January 9th, to do battle with the Welch Collage Lady Flames. Happily, for the second straight game in 2026, the Bluegrass bombers played well to take the "W", 80-66.
In the opening stanza, ALC lumped out with a quick 8-0 burst. This would enable them to lead 16-10 after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Alice Lloyd offense rode the hot-hand of junior forward Jamie Cowan who scored 12 of her squads 18 points. This gave the Caney Creek crew a 34-26 advantage by intermission.
In the third period, the Lady Eagles balance was on display as seven different players scored. This helped the home team take the stanza 18-15, and stretch their lead to 11 (52- 41) entering the final stanza.
In the last quarter, the Pippa Passes posse saw eight players score, combining to produce 28 big points. The game would never be in doubt as the Pippa Passes posse would take a nice 14-point victory.
For ALC (7-9) three players reached double-figures. Cowan led the way with 18 points on 6-12 field goals and 6-8 free throws. She also grabbed 9 rebounds. She was followed by the Stewart sisters. Bailey sank 5-7 field goals for 12 points while Shelby added 10. In addition, sophomore guard Ashtyn Barrett led the club with 4 assists while Cowan, Bailey Stewart, sophomore guard Elivia Moore, and sophomore forward Kaison Ward all collected 2 steals.
On the day, the Lady Eagles finished shooting 39.7% (31-78) from the field, 30% (6-20) from long-range, and 60% (12-20) from the charity stripe. They added 48 rebounds, 13 assists, and 13 steals
Karilyn Wieting led Welch (8-8) with 23 points. Her squad shot 31.3% (21-67) from the field, 17.9% (5-28) from long-range, and 70.4% (19-27) from the foul line. They added 54 rebounds, 14 assists and 8 steals.
