ALC Lady Eagles win scoring battle, earn victory at Welch, Tennessee
Gallatin, TN: The Alice Lloyd College Lady Eagles basketball team ventured to the Volunteer state on Saturday, December 6th, to do battle with the Welch Collage Lady Flames and complete a two-game road trip. Happily, for the second straight day, the Bluegrass bombers took over in the final stanza to win; this time, by a score of 93-81.
In the first period, led by guard Karilyn Wieting, WC came out well, and pulled out to a 22-17 lead after ten minutes of action.
In the second quarter, the Alice Lloyd offense rode the hot-hand of junior forward Jamie Cowan to produce 28 big points. This enabled the blue and white to catch up and lead 45-42 at the half.
In the third period, Lady Eagle freshman forward Alivia Morris delivered big minutes off the bench for the Caney Creek club. Each team produced 24 more points, which allowed the Lady Eagles to hold a slight 69-66 cushion entering the final stanza.
In the last quarter, the Pippa Passes posse broke the game open with a nice run. Cowan stuck several big shots and the Pippa Passes posse stretched out to a double-digit lead. She received aid from senior guard Aziah Campbell and sophomore guard Shelby Stewart, as the Kentucky crew held on for the nice 12-point victory.
For ALC (3-7) four players reached double-figures. Cowan led the way with 22 points on 8-13 accuracy. She also sank all 6 charity tosses and grabbed 8 rebounds. She was followed closely by Morris, who drilled 7-10 attempts for a career- high 19 points. She also nabbed 8 boards of her own.
Also reaching double-digits were Campbell and Stewart, each contributing 10 points. Stewart also led the squad with 4 assists and 2 blocks, and tied sophomore guard Elivia Moore with 3 steals.
On the day, the Lady Eagles finished with a solid 56.5% (35-62) accuracy from the field, 45.5% (5-11) from long-range, and 66.7% (18-27) from the charity stripe. They added 44 rebounds, 14 assists, and 11 steals
Wieting led Welch (2-6) with 23 points. Her squad shot 32.3% (21-65) from the field, 12.5% (3-24) from long-range, and 90% (36-40) from the foul line. They added 36 rebounds, 12 assists and 13 steals.
